It is estimated that 50 % of the UK population suffer from a food intolerance and about 4 % experience an allergy. Many people confuse food allergies with food intolerances and vice versa; many people are unaware that they are both two completely different reactions to food, as explained below; Symptoms Allergies tend to present an immediate reaction creating a immune response with symptoms such as tightening of the airways, swelling of the lips, coughing, wheezing or a runny nose and itchy red eyes being the most common, unfortunately the suffer will be permanently afflicted by the allergen. Intolerances - Do not involve an immune system response or the release of Histamine; however the food has an adverse affect on the body which can appear up to five days of indigestion. Symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, weight gain, digestive trouble, depression/mood swings, sinus problems, skin disorders and arthritis can indicate a food intolerance.
